Ian Winterman is the husband of Trish Wintterman and a suspect throughout the investigation in series 3. He is a teacher at the school in Broadchurch, where his daugther Leah goes to school.
During the investigation he refuses to give a voluntary DNA sample to the police.
He lives separated from Trish and also has a girlfriend, Sarah Elsey who sends threatening messages to Trish through an account registered in his name. He later breaks up with her and gets kicked out of their shared flat.
Ian is still in touch with his former student Leo Humphries, who helps him install spywear on Trish's computer which allows him to watch her through her webcam. Later he regrets it and steals the Laptop to have it unistalled by Leo again. Leah, his daughter, confronts him about it, telling him to put it in her locker by the end of the day and that it's supposed to be him parenting her not the other way around.
In the end of the series, he appears to want to reconcile his relationship with both Trish and his daughter. After the last service of Paul Coats he suggest that they have luch together.
