Gracepoint was the American adaptation of the ITV series Broadchurch. Unusual for an American adaptation, Broadchurch's leading man, David Tennant, also played the head detective on the American show, sporting an American accent.
The adaptation was commissioned due to the original series' success in the UK, leading to high hopes of a remake pleasing an American audience. Broadchurch didn't initially reach many people in the US when it aired there in its original form, due to it being aired on BBC America, a channel not many people were subscribed to, and the fact that many Americans found the accents in the original, especially David Tennant's Scottish tones, difficult to understand. Thus, the series was remade, with Chris Chibnall writing the initial episode before letting the American duo, Anya Epstein and Dan Futterman, take over the scripts.
The series was not received as well as expected, with audiences low around 1 million viewers, despite the much larger population of America and it being aired on a free-to-air channel. Due to this, the series was cancelled after the first season, despite initial hopes that it would extend further as its parent series did.
